Simply YOU story:
My family's Simply YOU journey has been a partnership between my husband, Matt Frank, and myself. We wanted to do everything we could to create a happy and healthy family. Little did we know that this goal would launch us into such a big terrain of learning through tons of research that we then applied to three big Simply YOU domains: reduce environmental toxins, eat a balanced diet of wholesome food, and put your life philosophy into practice.
My Sweet Family
Reduce environmental toxins: Much to our surprise, our home environments are filled with toxins that overload our bodies. We had to change almost all of our cleaning and personal care products. This was no easy task. We researched the toxins to avoid and after comparing this to what we had in our pantry we ended up starting from scratch with products from companies that shared our value of clean living that we could trust or making our own.
Eat a balanced diet of wholesome food: We diligently source our food to only buy from brands that we trust and we also grow our own food with a big organic garden filled with fresh garlic, herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, green beans, lettuce, kale, cucumbers, edamame, and squash. At a work function, my husband Matt heard Dan Buettner, author of Blue Zones, speak about his research into the parts of the world where people live long (over 100 years) and vibrant lives. The Blue Zones research is evidence-based and thorough. In 2016, I was certified as a health coach through the Dr. Sears Wellness Institute. This certification provided me with a much deeper understanding of why a balanced approach to wellness actually created good health! The combination of the Blue Zones research and the Dr. Sears Wellness certification have dramatically shifted our family's approach to food. We are now primarily plant-based with healthy legumes, nuts, seeds and fish for protein.
This is a significant but highly doable transformation. Believe me when I say we haven't always lived this way. Fifteen years ago, I was a single Mom going to college and working full-time and serving up Spaghettios as the main stay in my son's diet. Almost zero fruits and veggies graced his plate. We lived on processed food. I'm not exaggerating when I say nothing else. If I had a crystal ball back then that showed me the way we live now, I would have laughed and my thoughts would have been something like...A plant-based diet? No processed food? What about chicken nuggets? What is a green smoothie? Is it possible for kids to like eating salad and brussel sprouts?...I would have thought I dialed into another family's life. But we do live this life now, and we love it! The best part is that this transition wasn't hard. It took place slowly and consistently by tackling one toxic habit at a time and turning it into a healthy habit.
Put your life philosophy into practice: Our family has completely changed the way we live from the food we eat, to the way we clean, to how we spend our time and engage with one another. Our goal of creating a happy and healthy life includes a life philosophy that we put into practice through daily habits. For us, it is to:
Strive for balance
Fill our bodies with good food
Don't sweat the small stuff
Take time to downshift
Enjoy the outdoors
Laugh a lot
Have a grateful heart
We want to pass these Simply YOU habits along with the gift of a healthy and happy life to our children. We know our children are shaped by the way we live our life much more than by what we say. If there is one gift I can give my children, it is the gift of health and happiness. I envision Simply YOU habits having far-reaching impact as they are passed down from generation to generation.
It was when I realized that not only do I want my own children to have this gift I want other families to have it as well that led me to my purpose in life. To help people change their family's habits for a healthy and happy life.
